Great
Vic Bike Ride
This
year the Great Vic Bike Ride went from Mt Hotham to Mornington,
exploring some of Victoria’s greatest alpine and bay
areas. Kerry McCredden, Rob Melasecca, Scott Jensen and Dale
Emmerton all set off on the 29th of November to embark on
a big 580km in 9 days. The weather on the ride was generally
fine besides the freak storms that hit Victoria on Tuesday
the 2nd of December. But all four continued on and all finished
the ride comfortably on the 7th of December. Here’s
a quote that sums up Dale Emmerton’s experience on the
ride:
“I've
just got back from a social cycle around Victoria with 3,700
others. Am a
bit lost today as I was woken by an alarm not a tent zip and
the only queue
I have found was the traffic on the way to work.”

Adelaide
track training camp
The
Adelaide track training camp was a great success with warm
weather and a fast track making it perfect conditions to beat
old times. We had a couple of newies to the track in David
Nairn and Louisa Judd who both improved greatly over the two
days. Andrew Shannon, Ian Smith, Mark Prutton and Sigrid Pitkin
were all very happy to beat their times and get some valuable
experience on the board track.
Everyone was treated to a special appearance of Shane Kelly,
Ryan Bailey, Sean Eadie and some of the girls from the AIS.
Ryan was keen to have a chat and tell us of his experiences
in between efforts on the track. We were very lucky to have
the opportunity to meet and chat with the cream of Australian
track riders in a relaxed situation. Stay tuned to find out
when the next KWC track camp is.

The Basin hill climb is a tough 7km
winding up-hill ride that starts at the base of Mt Dandenong. It
is often referred to as the 1-in-20. Last weekend the Eastern Veterans
raced there and a special congratulation goes out to David Nairn
who improved his time for the climb by over 2 minutes coming in
with a time of 23mins 12secs. It’s good to see that all the
hard training is paying off. Greg Lipple also competed in the hill

Well
done to the four KWPT Junior Development Squad teams who braved

Team 1 narrowly missed out on a bronze medal by only 2 seconds.
Team 2 was the only all girls team to compete and did so with new

Cycle
Queensland 2003 Bike Ride
Well
done to Kathleen Buchanen and Jay Gould who both completed the Cycle
Queensland 2003, a nine day bike ride from Warwick to Cooloola.
The first few days were very cold and nearly every day there was
a head wind. The last few days fined up for the riders but they
were accompanied by 30+ degree weather and a few nasty climbs. Both
Kathleen and Jay soldiered on and they still had a great time despite
the testing conditions. Kathleen was given a special treat on the
last day when she was arriving into Gympie. Kathleen had left a
little late in the morning and was the last one on the course when
she was given a police escort for the last few kilometres. Kathleen
arrived at the finish with everyone cheering her on like she had
just won a stage of the Tour de France. Congratulations on your
great ride Kathleen and Jay.

2003
Victorian Road Championships
Saturday's
results saw the Womems 25km Time Trial being won by Kathy Watt.
Loretta Mabin showed a marked improvement from last season to place
6th (only 50secs off taking the Bronze Medal). Fred Boland placed
3rd in the Masters (5&6) Time Trial with an excellent ride in
the windy conditions. George Ward was just out of the placings in
4th place. Matt had his first experience of what a 40km Time Trial
was like, after moving up to the Open Mens Category.
On
Sunday, George won his first Victorian Road Championship in
the cold, rain and windy conditions. Like they say when it
gets tough the tough get going. Anni Jensen broke away with
Deborah Hobbs in the Womens Masters Championships and they
worked together until 4km to go when Debbie got away. Anni’s
Silver medal was fantastic having just recently resumed training
after recovering from an accident earlier in the season. In
the Masters (4) Kurt Jensen who is still recovering from a
cold, placed 5th. Kathy won the Womens 108km Road Race in
a sprint finish to the Dookie Pub from Liz Williams and Claire
Baxter. We all had a celebratory drink in the same Pub after
the race.

from the start. They teamed well together until George got dropped
with 7km to go. Kurt won the sprint from Mal with Loretta 3rd overall
(first woman) and George 4th.
Matt was 2nd in his bunch sprint and Fred had a good workout on
the hilly sections of the course.
On
Sunday, George backed up and rode everyone off the wheel (except
one) in a display of strength in the final 2km to finish 2nd
in the Colnago Cup event at Somers.
Annie
who only just cameback from a broken collarbone has shown
great improvement to place 4th.

Tonight
we had the final race for the Carnegie Caulfield Club Championship;
a balancing race on the grass. Once any of the competitors put
their foot down on the ground, they were out of the race. The
long grass made this a challenging task and we had a few favourites
go out early. It was great to see some of the children that didn't
place in the other competitions win medals for their skills. See
the race results.

Well
done to Anni (Cycle), Julie (Kayak) and Kerryn (Run) on an excellent
performance in The Mars Challenge in Ballarat where they placed
second in the womens team section. Anni's cycle time trialling has
improved considerably and she was only 10secs off the fastest bike
time over 79km! See Anni's comments and race
results.
In
other veterans racing, George consulted the Melways before this
weeks race (after getting lost last
race when he time trialled past the corner official) and collected
a white envelope for his efforts. He attacked E Grade and proceeded
straight past D Grade as well, much to Fred's delight. It was on
a hill and George is yet to get grease on his small chain ring;
he is very strong! Fred had to explain to the other D graders that
George would most likely be joining them next week. Kurt Jensen
gained a 3rd placing in B Grade with another consistent performance.
Fred Boland won D Grade in a sprint.

Kurt
Jensen has won the "World Veterans Straightline 300m Sprint"
competition at Maryborough on the weekend and has added an impressive

trial Anni Jensen won Silver in the straight line sprint. Then just
to prove it wasn’t by chance she outsprinted a class field
including former champion Sian Mulholand to win the criterium. Kerrie
McCredden has recovered well from her bike path accident to finish
4th. Anni was awarded a jersey for winning the "South Pacific
Veterans Criterium." See

The
children from the Kathy Watt Personal Training Junior Development
Program performed well at the Carnegie Caulfield Club Championships
which was held in windy conditions on the weekend. They rode time
trials, sprints and an elimination. It was good to see everyone
improving.
Andrew
Shannon, the patron of the childrens program rode strongly in
the Elite Men to win the Sprint, place second in the points Race
and finish third in the Scratch Race. Andrew finished second in
the overall club championship title.
Ian Smith finished the track season on a high with a convincing
victory in
the 1km Time Trial and was second to Andrew in the Sprint.
Well
done to the children from the KWPT Junior development program who
performed brilliantly to win Gold and Silver medals for Caulfield
Carnegie Club in the Victorian Championships held at the Brunswick
Velodrome against the other State clubs on the weekend. In the U13
Teams Pursuit Steven, Liam, Patrick and Michael teamed well together
to win. In the U13 Olympic Sprint, Josh, Stuart and Patrick finished
2nd to Blackburn in a very close finish. A special thanks to Patrick
for helping with the team strategies and encouraging the other juniors
throughout the season.
Max
Read's track sprinting abilities shone through as he easily won
the
sprint finish in the F Grade Road Race at Crib Point on Sunday.

Fred
Boland takes his Medal tally to 'four' after finishing 3rd in the
Victorian
Championship Scratch Race at the Vodafone Arena on the weekend.
Andrew
Shannon rode impressively taking out the last sprint in the points
race
qualifier to make the final of the Sid Patterson Grand Prix.
Well done
to Sophia Stefanos who completed the Nike Women's 10km Classic
on Sunday 30th March. Sophia has been doing some personal training
sessions, walking, cycling and weights work-outs with Kathy in
the lead up to the event. Her husband, George gave the sessions
to her as a present after the birth of their 3rd child. Before
the race Sophia joined thousands of other women in the aerobics
warm up in Bourke Street Mall. The Channel 10 TV crew did a story
on her during the race.
Everyone
from the Track training group enjoyed an end of season Pizza Party
at Zac's Pizza Restaurant in Bentleigh on Wednesday night after
track training. There were plenty of tales to tell and the judges
are still deciding the winner of Scott and Jeremy when it comes
to body building. Congratulations to Ian on a great performance
winning the heat of the Wangaratta wheel race. Unfortunately he
got caught up behind a crash in the final. Ian, we hope you recover
quickly.
The
Great Melbourne Bike Ride got under way from Lygon Street,Carlton
early on Sunday 23rd March. We had quite a few members from the
KWPT training groups taking part including some riders from the
junior development
program. Most of the riders came back to our tent for food and refreshments
after finishing. A special thanks to everyone who helped at the
tent. Dale, Norman, Dianne and Kevan took off in the first wave
of riders while Melinda and family, Rachel, Belinda and Kathleen
left when some of the crowd had dispersed. With 15,000 riders taking
part it was helpful to have good
bike skills. Olympia and Jenna -10yrs (Jnr Devt program) rode the
whole 45km!! Olympia rang her parents while crossing the West Gate
Bridge to tell them she was going great. Neil and Kristine rode
with their sons, Tyler (10yrs), Mitchell (8yrs) and Josh (7yrs)
in the 25km ride. Josh completed the journey on his Speed Demon
bike and upon finishing went
straight to the massage tent (I agree he deserved it! but I couldn't
help laughing...they learn young)! Kathy
Ferne
Walklate who has just taken up competitive cycling finished 2nd
in the Womens division of the Caulfield Carnegie Criterium at Glenvale
crescent. Ferne has kept on improving since joining our training
group to do the 210k Around the Bay in a Day. She now trains with
the track group and comes on the Dandenong Ranges and Beach Rd rides.
Some
great results from the Victorian Pursuit Championships at Vodafone
Arena. Max Read (70-74yrs) - Silver,
Fred Boland - Silver, and Kurt
Jensen who has shown remarkable improvement of late (esp. in the
Dandenong Ranges rides) took Bronze
over another KWPT member Rob Licciardo.
Two
weekends ago David Nairn (a member of KWPT Around the Bay training
Group) finished 3rd in the F grade Eastern vets - Well Done. David
said, "I was Outsmarted/sprinted by Kenton Smith, winner of
the Austral in 1965! I'll keep at it, and will eventually work it
out! I think that is the first placing in a competition since I
was 12!"

KWPT Junior
Development Race Day @ Carnegie Velodrome
Together
with the assistance of the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club and Andrew
Shannon, close to 30 junior track cyclists aged between 6 and 13
participating in the KWPT Junior Development
Program competed for prizes proudly donated by of eight
local businesses.
A great day
of racing was had by all the juniors who took part in the cycling
racing at the Carnegie Velodrome on Saturday. There were quite
a few surprises in the results as the children were able to race
in several styles of racing (sprints, scratch Races, time trials
and team events). They were
able to learn from what they did in the earlier races and make
improvements for the next race which made for some close finishes
especially in the final 1 Lap sprint competition. Many thanks
to all those volunteers who helped in both the lead up to and
on the day to make the event the success that it was.
Congratulations
to Tony Bennett for his win in E Grade at Southern Veterans criterium
racing at the Sandown Raceway. With the assistance of Annie Jensen,
they both broke away in the lead break of six riders with Tony winning
in a sprint to the finish. Along with the prize money, Tony now
also graduates to D Grade.

Bronzed
Aussies-Victorian Track Championships
Some
great results from the Victorian Championships at Vodafone Arena
where cyclists from KWPT training group won 3 Bronze medals in the
Time Trial events and 2 Bronze medals in the Sprint events. It was
Max Reid's first time on the podium and it was Fred Boland and Kurt
Jensen's first time track racing. Max achieved his Bronze result
in the 70-74 age group, Fred Boland won Bronze (55-59 age group)
with Kurt Jensen taking Bronze (45-49 age group). Jeremy (1min11secs),
Ian Smith (1m12), Frank Cipriano (1m12), Daniel (1m13) and Matt
Jensen (1m17) all recorded PB's in the Mens Open Kilo.
Other
impressive results include:
Jimmy
Spanswick (Masters 2) GOLD -
Sprint and Time trial
Mark Nelson (M3) Bronze Sprint
Rob licciardo (M4-5) bronze-Sprint and time trial
Also,
well done to Annie Jensen who outsprinted many more fancied rivals
to come 3rd in E Grade at Southern Veterans criterium racing at
the Sandown Raceway on Thursday 27 Feb.
Leongatha
race organizers put on some great racing for the Junior and Novice
riders catering for all ages from 6 years and up. It was the first
time the riders from the KWPT Junior Development program have attended
a race meeting and the children had learn't a lot from the experience.
The
Leongatha track has a slightly steeper banking than Carnegie so
once they adjusted to that they won many placings in all the race
divisions. The organizers named them the "City Slickers"
team for the Italian Pursuits and they won these divisions. The
children had done plenty of team racing in training so it was
great to see them have success riding together as a team as well
as the individual events.
Sigrid
Pitkin rode strongly to win the Womens Handicap Race At Forges
Wheelrace Night at Melbourne's Vodafone Arena on Saturday night.

Around
the Bay in a Day
Everyone
who completed the KWPT Cycling Around the Bay Training course finished
the 210km event. Members rode on Road bikes, Mountain bikes and
hybrids to complete the distance and rode together in groups of
similar abilities, encouraging each other not to give up when it
got hard. Everyone who trained with Kathy Watt's Personal Training
improved their fitness and bike skills. Initially we worked on the
skills component of cornering, braking and riding competently in
a group. Then we worked on the riders fitness and provided tips
on nutrition, drinking, stretching and mechanics to accomplish the
ATB distance. Many of the riders combined this training with their
regular spinning sessions or gym sessions at Fitness First. Everyone
made new friends from the club. All the riders are looking forward
to the next Challenge and to riding quicker in next year's "Around
the Bay in a Day" ride.
