Kathy Watt created cycling history when she won the first gold medal for Australia in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic road race. No other Australian cyclist male or female has ever won the road race at the Olympic Games. Kathy almost won double gold when she raced several days later in the women’s 3km Individual Pursuit narrowly finishing second to take the silver medal. She also won Gold (Road) and Silver(Pursuit) when she represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games in 1990. Kathy won the Australian Junior 3,000 metre Championship at Olympic Park in 1984 as a runner. Then Kathy chose cycling on the advice of a physiotherapist after injuring her Achilles tendon running at a track meeting some years ago. Kathy has competed in numerous sports (netball, tennis, volleyball,XC Skiing, orienteering, etc) before taking up cycling. |
